Our popular idea of the word ‘great’ has to do with power, size and strength. We even tend to see it as better than good. That’s why we would prefer a great place to a good place. But the word ‘greatness’ in the spiritual sense does not seem to have much association with that idea. Greatness, in the spiritual sense, is associated with littleness and humility. In the Gospel, Jesus sets before us a symbol of this greatness: a little child. And he even teaches that, unless we change and become like little children, we will never enter the kingdom of heaven. It is clear then that it is only in littleness and humility that we will be able to enter into our eternal home.
