The people wonder at the gracious words that proceed from Jesus’ lips as he reads out a passage from Isaiah in the synagogue. Jesus’ very presence is the fulfillment of that prophecy. He is that liberator, that saviour who is anointed and sent by the Father for the redemption of the world. He will preach the Gospel to the poor, forgive and heal the contrite of heart, and deliver the captives … however, the same people who “wonder at the gracious words” and “whose eyes are fixed on him” are later “filled with anger towards him. His humble origin and missionary plan of human liberation do not fit into their idea of a saviour. The reality is that Jesus saves through humble service and painful suffering.
